The Language of the Shuttle

Between knots, a shuttle still travels. The small wooden tool that keeps the structure of the carpet honest.

Everyone photographs the pile. Fewer people watch the shuttle.

It is a small wooden thing, darkened by oil from a thousand hands. It carries the weft that locks each row of knots into a textile that can be walked on, rolled, unrolled, and lived with.

Without that pass, a carpet is only a drawing in wool. With it, the drawing becomes a structure — something that will hold in a London hallway or a Delhi living room the same way it held on the loom in Bhadohi.

Craft at Divine Teppich is this double language: the visible knot, and the almost invisible weft that makes the knot possible.

Read it beside On the Loom. One is the wall. The other is the sentence travelling through it.
